Well I've finally took the plunge and bought myself a Nikon D40x! Yes! So far, I'm very happy with the pictures. My main concern, as you may have read in the previous posts was the lack of a flash pc socket, but Nikon have an adaptor to fit on the hot-shoe for this. I successfully bid on one on eBay. I will also be fitting my new camera with a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB SD card so I won't have to worry about running out of space when snapping away. Just now I have fitted it with a standard 512Mb card and it's still quick.
The only down side (if you can call it that) about getting a camera this compact and not aimed at the pros is the lack of buttons for controlling things you may wan to change regularly such as the IOS and Drive settings. With the D40x this is done through the Menu. But, hey, it's only a extra few seconds spent going through the menu, plus if you have too many buttons and dials, you could spend a while trying to familiarise yourself with them.
I chose the Nikon D40x over the D80 for the compact size and ease of use, yet I still get the same 3 frames per second and 10.1 Mp sensor. Plus I discovered I could still use my old flash gun via the hot-shoe adaptor. Fantastic.
